Over the weekend our friends at Buffalo ReUse gathered hundreds of volunteers to help deconstruct a home as part of ABC’s show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. The house came down in 15-17 hours, depending on if you count the TV cheesing. Many of the materials that hundreds of volunteers salvaged from the home will go into other house rehab projects in the neighborhood and the remaining materials were brought back to The ReSource (their salvage retail outlet) for public consumption.
Buffalo ReUse is a sustainable not-for-profit organization that offers a community-minded alternative to traditional demolition. Through their retail outlet, The ReSource, Buffalo ReUse keeps perfectly good building materials in circulation, out of landfills, while serving as a vehicle for job training and leadership development for young women and men. As their skills develop and their interests evolve, participants can move into other areas of the organization and learn about sales, marketing, and community relations while working at the ReSource.
They also work with existing community organizations, city agencies and block clubs to help create fertile ground, both physical and social, for affected neighborhoods. They plant fruit trees, turn soil into productive agricultural land, and provide green space for recreation, creating and fortifying favourable conditions for our communities.
These guys are great! Check 'em out!... www.buffaloreuse.org
